The new building at the ´De Heuvelrand´swimming pool in Voorthuizen was designed by Slangen + Koenis Architecten and fitted with a Derako solid wood ceiling system. For this project, the architect chose the linear multi-panel system whereby wooden slats of pine in five different widths are combined into a dynamic pattern.

Both the carriers and the wooden slats are specially treated by Derako for pool applications, creating a highly resistant and durable system.. The wooden ceiling gives the building a natural warm look and allows for a direct visual connection to the natural environment which is visible through the large windows.

Wooden ceiling with varying panel widths and integrated lighting

Within the multi-panel version, in addition to the clear-coated slats, it was chosen to use white painted slats at regular intervals in the structure.  When designing the installation pattern a position light plan was also integrated, whereby narrow and wide fixtures were incorporated into the ceiling. Not only is this aestheticly pleasing, it also provides balanced lighting. With panels of varying widths, white accents and integrated lighting a unique and inspiring design was created. The future was also thought about, by integrating smart access hatches into the ceiling. Maintenance work can now be easily carried out on the underlying installations.

Unique ceiling corners – Derako advises

Derako was also involved with the technical design challenges, in which two different curves in the ceiling corners had to be connected to each other. With Derako´s advise the curves in the design were adjusted and a flowing and meticulously fitting ceiling was created. Also, the systems were curved to the shape of the window frames.

Good teamwork

All carriers were delivered prefabricated and curved into the desired shape in advance so that they exactly fitted into the shape of the building. Therefore there was no sawing required on location and the installation was completed quickly and efficiently. Eissink builders provided professional ceiling mounting with pro-active teamwork and in addition complementary shanks were placed behind the ceilings. As for all Derako systems the builder received a clear installation plan and the carriers had unique codes, as a result the elements were positioned quickly and in the correct order.

Internationally there is also a lot of interest in the 'Heuvelrand' project. A interesting item was posted on Archdaily.com.
